Nimba County

Located in northeastern Liberia, just a four- to five-hour drive from the capital, Monrovia, Nimba County stands out as one of the country’s most captivating destinations. With its mist-covered mountains, lush forests alive with butterflies, and sweeping savannahs, Nimba is a true natural gem. It is also Liberia’s second-most populous county and among its most economically vibrant regions.

At the heart of Nimba’s appeal are its majestic mountains, led by the iconic Mount Nimba. From its heights, visitors can take in sweeping views that stretch across three countries—Liberia, Guinea, and Côte d’Ivoire. The Nimba Range is also home to the Giant African Swallowtail, the largest butterfly on the continent. Beyond its natural beauty, Mount Nimba offers insight into Liberia’s mining heritage, having once hosted operations by LAMCO (the Liberian-American-Swedish Mining Company).

Established in 2003, East Nimba Nature Reserve protects approximately 11,500 hectares of the Mount Nimba Range on the Liberian side. Two paved roads built in the 1960s by LAMCO still wind up the mountain today. Along the way, visitors pass a Forestry Development Authority checkpoint, where an entrance fee is required. As the road climbs, the landscape shifts dramatically—from dense forest to open savannah, and finally to the misty, terraced remains of the former mining site.

The main access road leads to Blue Lake, a georgous mine pit transformed into a striking, tranquil body of water. From there, guided hikes along the tri-border trail reward visitors with breathtaking views of the surrounding countries. Travelers are encouraged to arrange guides through their guesthouse or hotel for safe and informative day hikes within the reserve.

While Sanniquellie serves as the county capital, Ganta is its largest city and Liberia’s second-largest urban center. Yekepa, located at the base of Mount Nimba, is the closest town to East Nimba Nature Reserve and a common starting point for visitors.

Within the reserve, Nimba Ecolodge—situated near Blue Lake—offers the only on-site accommodation and dining. Outside the reserve, both Sanniquellie and Yekepa provide a range of lodging and restaurant options, making them convenient bases for exploring the area.
